Carey Mulligan delivers an arguably career-best performance in Emerald Fennell’s rape revenge thriller. Fennell uses a rom-com palette and romantic red herrings that subvert expectations in clever, incendiary, powerful fashion. As unsparing of “nice guys” and women with internalised misogyny as it is of leering violent thugs, the film holds a mirror up to the audience in telling and plausible fashion, yet never fails to entertain or deliver the genre goods. Gripping, incisive, nuanced, and thought-provoking. (Viewed on television.)
