Another fairy tale for grown-ups, Guillermo Del Toro’s masterpiece tells the story of ten-year-old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), who is taken to live with her stepfather, an officer in Franco’s army, during the dying embers of the Spanish Civil War. Whilst said stepfather fights rebel militia in the forest, Ofelia discovers a mysterious labyrinth and a faun, who tells her she is the reincarnation of a long-lost princess of an underworld kingdom. Del Toro’s genius is in depicting the “fantasy” world to be every bit as brutal as the wartime “reality”.
