How ‘My Favorite Murder’ Conquered the World of True Crime Podcasts
And built an empire from a single podcast
In 2016, my friend Cory asked me if I was going to see the My Favorite Murder (MFM) show at Red Rocks. I try to keep my finger on the pulse of new, fantastic alternative bands. However, I had never heard of these guys — were they from the UK? Seattle? Did fuzzy beats back-up shrieking vocals? Or, was the band more contemplative? Would I love them? Should I confess I’d never heard the music of My Favorite Murder?
I panicked when I had to play off the question and quickly looked up MFM. I breathed a sigh of relief when I realized this was the title of a podcast, and not an edgy band featuring a washboard and ukulele. Later that evening as I folded laundry, I tuned in for two hour-long episodes, and I was hooked. I found the perfect podcast I didn’t even know I needed.
Like a large, colorful swath of society, I am fascinated by true crime. Women, especially, are drawn to the world of investigative true crime, making up 73% of the television and podcast audience . We enjoy listening to the tales of survivors, and educating ourselves on predators. We still may fall victim to violence, but dissecting cases gives us a sense of situational control –regardless of how false. True crime podcasts help our own life…
