All of this! U2 produced some of the greatest rock music of the 80s & 90s (I don’t love most of their post “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” albums). They let their faith inform their music, rather than the other way around. The problem with most music (with a few exceptions) labeled as “Christian rock” is that the “musicians” are preachers with marginal music talent, and their music appeals only to the choir. Great art points toward God in its excellence & beauty — it doesn’t need “And I will praise you…Lord” in its chorus to do so. That feels forced, heavy-handed, and not like a work of phenomenal creativity. At any rate, this is an excellent article & gives me the urge to pull out “Rattle & Hum” for a listen.
